Understanding the ‘Sugar Blues’ with Senn HS

About 30 of Senn’s Freshman were commited this summer to building organic gardens on Senn’s school grounds. I was invited by We Farm America, the head of the gardening project to join the fun and talk about SUGAR! I spent two hours with them and together we answered:
- How much sugar really is in our favorite foods like: Gatorade, Soda, and Vitamin Water?
- How much sugar does the average America really consume everyday?
- What happens when we eat too much sugar?
- How do you read a label to know if there is sugar in it and how much?
- What foods are better choices for satisfying our sweet tooth?
The kids tried Coconut Water and Raw Honey for the first time. We also whipped up No-Bake Chocolate PB Sesame Balls and enjoyed eating them outside by their new gardens, while we made goals on how to add better sugar choices into our diets.
I will be speaking again at Senn High School on an array of health topics with teachers, parents and more students this coming school year!

Double Shot Please!

Millions of Americans are drained. We are all reaching for a jolt to keep our energy level productive, usually leading us to grab forms of caffeine or sugar. Soon to be followed with a crash, forcing us to do it all over again. Are we living or are we surviving? In today’s modern life we have added in a great deal of tasking and responsibility without upping the anti on our nutrition. In fact, choosing a longer list throughout the day over taking care of our body has nutritionally deprived us even more.
This past month, I have been getting loads of questions about detoxing methods. Thank you for all the questions. So, what are some foods that help detox the body? There are several out there, I know. Today, I would like to highlight the cleansing [and energizing] power of WHEAT GRASS.
Wheat grass can offer balance and re-energize your day, while cleansing the body to set the platform for future foods to be better assimilated by the body. Yep, that’s right wheat grass helps with releasing excess fats and mineral deposits that are trapped in the body, while adding in high quality amino acids, vitamins and minerals! Wheat grass has been known to:
• Improve complexion
• Improve liver function
• Purify the blood
• Increase your metabolism
• Stimulate circulation
• Protect against pollution
• Deodorize the body
• DNA repair
So, now that you understand the power of this grass…HOW DO YOU GET IT IN? Dr. Ann Wigamore’s book The Wheat grass Book, gives instruction on growing your own indoor wheat grass garden and juicing. But, if gardening sounds like too much work, now is the time to locate your nearest juice bar, or health food store. I know we have all located our nearest Starbucks to get our double shot of espresso; now is the time to find our nearest juice bar! Order up a double shot of wheat grass [ask for a lemon or orange wedge for after] and join the living!
